Pilsen is one of Chicago’s 77 Community Neighborhoods and known as ‘the heart of Chicago’. Pilsen was originally settled in the 1840s by German and Irish immigrants. In the mid 1900’s, Mexican migrants began to settle in Pilsen and continue to be the predominate nationality in the neighborhood.
Storefront art galleries, the resonance of church bells on Sundays, and bicycle-powered Mexican food-carts are all part of the charm of this diverse neighborhood. While community officials lobby to secure sections of Pilsen on the historical district register, new development and rehabilitation are transforming the neighborhood into a contemporary place to live.
More than half the dwellings in Pilsen are multi-family, with many valued between $150,000 to $300,000 and a few gems priced well over a $1 million. The thriving artist community is helping Pilsen is undergo a shift in terms of neighborhood real estate. Many homes have been restored to their original historic character.
For some of the best Mexican cuisine in Chicago, try Don Pedro’s Taquiria. Skylark is a dive bar famous as a backdrop in the movie The Breakup. Nightwood is a trendsetting favorite. Pilsen has many vintage shops and is a bastion for organic and sustainable living, where you can take a class to learn to make kimchi or learn to grow your own vegetables hydroponically during winter.
The Chicago Arts District hosts 2nd Fridays Gallery Night, the monthly opening receptions at the galleries and artists’ studios centered around South Halsted and 18th Streets in Chicago. This unique art community lets you get up close and personal with the art and artists.
