A tiny pocket of a neighborhood just south of the Loop, Printers Row is a very modern community whose name and buildings harken back to its roots in publishing and printing. Bounded by Congress, Polk, Plymouth and the river, this neighborhood overlaps in large part with the landmarked Printing House Row District. Today however the neighborhood has seen its buildings converted to lofts, office space, restaurants and shops and in recent years several universities have expanded their campuses and student housing into Printer’s Row. The high point of the year in Printer’s Row comes in June during the Printer’s Row Lit Fest which brings authors, publishers and readers together in one of the country’s most prominent literary festivals.
Homebuyers looking for real estate close to the Loop will find a combination of high-rises, condominiums and rehabbed lofts from which to choose in Printer’s Row. However those asking their Realtor to find them a single-family home will not find much inventory in the area. The current median price of condominiums in the area is $251,000 and condominiums range between $150,000 and well over $1,000,000. The neighborhood is best known for the vintage properties that have been converted into lofts since the 1970’s. However mid- and high-rise condominium buildings have been added to the housing stock over the last three decades.
Printers Row is an extremely walkable neighborhood with charming streets that evoke the days of great publishing in Chicago. Today, however, residents of the neighborhood enjoy restaurants such local mainstay, Hackneys Printer’s Row. In addition, charming small shops can be found throughout the neighborhood. Printers Row Fine & Rare Books (715 S Dearborn St, 312-583-1800) is a fine example of one of those stores. The shop’s interior is much like a Victorian bookshop and it contains stained-glass shelves and a fireplace.
