The community area of North Center is located on the north side of Chicago, bounded by Montrose Avenue, Diversey Parkway, Ravenswood Avenue and the Chicago River. Within North Center are the neighborhoods of Roscoe Village, St. Ben’s, Hamlin Park and Northcenter.
North Center’s history is deeply rooted in European cultural influences, and that history can be seen in the architectural charm of the homes and buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time, the Selig Polyscope Company produced some of America’s earliest motion pictures and was based in Chicago; their historic production buildings are still standing and being used as residences and retail businesses. The neighborhood includes bowling alleys, three city parks – including an indoor ice arena and North Center Town Square. Boutiques, cafes, bars and cultural attractions are in abundance throughout the many neighborhoods in North Center.
North Center has experienced a stable and steady growth in housing value. Overall, values are up 20% from 10 years ago, with even higher growth in the explosion of single-family homes being renovated or newly built to accommodate the many families looking to live in this friendly community. Values are expected to rise by 5% over the coming year. Prices for condos and homes in Lincoln Square range from $125,000 for an entry level condominium to $2.4million for an extraordinary single family home featuring a theater, basketball court, swimming pool and 4 car garage.
For places to eat, drink and play, the choices are endless. Martyrs’ and Katerina’s (stellar jazz performers) are long time favortites. Try Corner 41 for the lobster burger. For an amazing cocktail try Tiny Lounge; I recommend the bourbon martini or the margarita. For the best burger around – Kuma’s lounge. Visit Caro Mio for yummy Italian, and best of all, it’s BYOB. If you want to swim, play baseball or wander through 15 acres of park stroll over to Welles Park. And a can’t miss festival is the annual Ribfest Chicago every June.
North Center has quietly and steadily matured into a delightful, livable neighborhood, filled with beautiful homes, trendy and local shops, great food and a low-key vibe.
