Neighborhood Overview

Located just 15 minutes northwest of the Loop, Avondale has a uniquely chill vibe and the industrial surroundings that has made Avondale one of the main strongholds of the Northwest side of Chicago. Back in the day, Berlin, Dad’s Root Beer, Florsheim Shoes, Bally Manufacturing, and Yardley Created Plastics were open for business in Avondale. It was these employers among many others that lured people to live and work in the “neighborhood that built Chicago.”

Known for generously sized lots and pretty, tree-lined streets, the housing options are as diverse as the people who call Avondale home with single family homes converted from brick 2-flats and 3-flats, loft condos converted from factories and other industrial spaces, new build condos and townhomes. The median property value in Avondale for single family homes is $465K and the median range for condos in the area spans from $190K to around $300K.

Our Favorite Places

Avondale offers an attractive location to prospective home buyers with its proximity to the Kennedy Expressway, the CTA blue line, and the northern branch of the Chicago River. Avondale is also home to part of the 312 River Run Trail, a landscaped river walk that is lovely for biking, running, or even trying your hand at fishing the northern branch of the river that is accessible along the trail.

Take in the waterside views while sipping on some of the most creative craft beers in the city at Metropolitan Brewing’s taproom. The bar overlooks the water and has a punk rock theme (the servers and staff were covered with cool tattoos!)

Joong Boo Market is a long time favorite of Debra and Katharine! Just inside the market is the “Snack Corner”, a quick-service restaurant famed for its authentic Korean cuisine. Grab lunch at the counter mid shop then shop for the freshest seafood at terrific prices.

Kuma’s Corner is often referred to as the best burger in Chicago and has been a burger lover’s destination ever since it opened in 2005. There are lots of heavy-hitters who claim that Kuma’s has the best burger in town. We recommend chowing down on the Black Sabbath burger while enjoying this one-of-a-kind heavy metal themed joint.
